Pendant des centaines d'années, il existait dans les îles Britanniques, des chats de gouttière au corps robuste et musclé, une tête et des yeux ronds.

Après la 2e guerre mondiale, certains éleveurs, qui avaient pu sauver quelques sujets, les ont croisés avec des Sacrés de Birmanie et ensuite, avec des Persans, dans le but d'améliorer le type rond, le corps massif, la couleur des yeux ronds comme des billes et le poil dense. C'est le croisement avec le Persan qui a fait du British Shorthair, un chat calme, doux et attachant. Dans les années 70, la couleur bleue est tellement appréciée qu'elle devient la couleur de référence. Depuis, bien d'autres couleurs ont été développées : lilac, chocolat, noir, silver tabby, crème, etc.

Gedurende honderde jaren bestonden er in de Britse eilanden straatkatten met een stevig, gespierd lichaam, een rond hoofd en grote ronde ogen.

Na de 2de wereldoorlog hebben bepaalde fokkers, die enkele exemplaren hadden kunnen redden, deze met Heilige Birmanen en vervolgens met Perzen gekruist, teneinde het massieve ronde lichaam, de kleur van de als knikkers ronde ogen en de dichte vacht te verbeteren. Het is eveneens de kruising met de Perzen die van de Britse Korthaar een aanhankelijke, kalme, zachte kat heeft gemaakt.

De blauwe kleur had zo een succes in de jaren 70 dat zij de referentiekleur werd. Sindsdien werden veel andere kleuren ontwikkeld : lilac, chocolade, zwart, silver tabby, creme, enz.

Look

Le British shorthair est un chat bien musclé de taille moyenne à grande. Son cou est court et épais. Sa tête est en forme de pomme; elle doit avoir les des joues pleines (surtout les mâles). Ses oreilles sont petites, arrondies au bout et bien espacées.

Ses yeux sont grands et ronds. Leur couleur peut varier : cuivre, bleu, vert, ... en fonction de la couleur de sa robe.

Sa queue est de longueur moyenne, épaisse, au bout arrondi.

Ses pattes sont courtes et ses pieds, ronds.

Sa fourrure doit être dense, courte, avec un sous-poil épais. En ce qui concerne le toilettage, la fourrure ne nécessite qu'un coup de brosse, une fois par semaine. Néanmoins, pendant la période de mue, le brossage devra être plus fréquent.

En un mot, le British shorthair à l'aspect d'un nounours.

De Britse Korthaar is middelmatig tot groot en zeer gespierd. Hij heeft een dikke korte hals, het hoofd heeft de vorm van een appel met volle wangen en dit vooral voor wat betreft de katers. De oren zijn klein en afgerond en staan ver uit elkaar. De ogen moeten groot en rond zijn en de kleur variëert in functie van de jurk : koper, blauw, groen, enz.

De staart mag niet te lang zijn en is afgerond aan het einde. De poten zijn kort en de voeten rond. De vacht moet dicht en kort zijn met een dikke ondervacht. Wat het onderhoud betreft, dient hij slechts eens per week te worden geborsteld. Niettemin, gedurende de periode van rui moet het borstelen frequenter gebeuren.

In één woord, de Britse Korthaar heeft het aspect van een "Teddy beertje".

The British Shorthair is a cat of average size to large and quite muscular. His neck is thick and short. His head have the form of an apple and his cheeks are full (specially for the male). His ears are small with a round end and well spaced.

His eyes are large and round, whose color varies according to the dress : copper, blue, green, etc.

His tail have a medium size, thick with a round end.

His legs are short and his feets round.

His fur is dense and short with a thick undercoat. With regard to grooming, the fur does not require more than a brush once a week. Nevertheless, for the period of moult, brushing will have to be more frequent.

In one word, The British Shorthair have the aspect of a "Teddy bear".
